Coco Before Chanel (2009)

A fairly plain biopic, the film is delicately made and pretty to look at but it is unfortunately slow, as many life stories are, and it seems the story told would only be truly interesting if you are a fan of Chanel.

It is filmed beautifully and the costumes are wonderful, as you would expect from a film about a designer. It is very typical of a French cinema as everything is elegant and even the colour scene of the sets seems to work with Chanel’s principles of neutral tones.

The cast is very good, although all the roles are fairly simple and there are no truly interesting characters or moments in this film. I do not know how faithful to Coco Chanel’s life it is but it did a good job of telling a story of the slow rise of a famous woman.
