Dracula (1992)

* *

This is an odd and sexually charged film with an all-star cast who fully commit to all the craziness that Coppola had them do. Despite this commitment from the strong cast everything happening in the film is still difficult to fully believe.

Dracula has always been a monster who I felt was the most real of some of the classics (such as Frankenstein), however Coppola accentuates every character and setting creating an overly bizarre film which then distances its audience to the extent that vampires are just a joke and not a horrifying monster.
The film also runs for too long and you feel as though it should have ended several times before it finally does. While nearing the end, once again, the drama is intensified to unnecessary heights. Coppola does not seem to understand that the best part of a fantasy film is its believability; one of the reasons Harry Potter is so famous is because everyone wants to be a wizard and seem to have the potential to be (until after the age of 11). No one takes a monster or a story seriously if they do not believe it.
