21 Jump Street (2012)
* * * *
Ridiculously juvenile humour but it was directed
and written so well (with some strong performances from the lead
characters) that even the more mature in the audience could not help
giggling at many points. It does obviously have a target audience but
anyone with a sense of humour can find something to laugh at.
Channing Tatum actually performs well in this; it
is rare for him to be quite so funny, unfortunately he is overshadowed
by Jonah Hill who is a skilled actor even when not in his traditional
comic roles. The supporting cast is less skilled, other than a
surprising cameo; some of the characters are slightly over-the-top. This
could be direction, as it is a comedy and the director could have been
trying to create a more slap-stick cast, however it does appear to be
relatively bad acting.
The best thing about this film is that they make
fun of themselves on several occasions and helps to show the audience
the type of humour they were intending to produce. It is a comedy for a
younger generation which is very brave as it is based on a 20 year old
programme, both the humour is aimed at teens/young adults but some of
the jokes are best on modern pop culture and school references.
