Brief Encounter (1945)

* * * * 1/2

A stunning classic cautionary tale of how our fantasies do not always work in reality.

This could have been turned into a villainous story about two adulterers (Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard), however it is performed well so there is no malice felt towards them, you may even be rooting for them to have a happy ending. At the same time you also feel attached to the relationship between Celia Johnson’s character and her husband (Cyril Raymond). This allows the audience to empathise with Johnson’s character and makes the tale more tragic.
A talented way of creating deeper characters was the use of a stream of consciousness from the lead female played by Johnson. At first it seemed like lazy storytelling, however as the film went on it was clearer that the narration added to the emotion of the film and gave a clearer view of the purity of the love that the character had for her two men.
The main criticism of this film, for me, is the fact that the two characters fell in love too quickly over too short a time, however this is a romantic film and thus there is a vastly idealistic view of love being presented and therefore I will have to overlook the speed at which these two fell in love.
