* * * 1/2
This is perfect for anyone who enjoys gory films as there is
a lot of blood and massacring. The best part of this film is the story which
means that all the slaughtering that happens does not seem pointless
entertainment but actually part of the story.
Luckily the film is entirely in Japanese and therefore needs
subtitles; this means that a lot of the cliches and cheese that leaks into the
script and editing is not as noticeable. Certain lines, particularly when the
characters are dying, seem insincere or over-romanticised; on several occasions
as well there are dated zooming shots attempting to increase tension. My
dislike of these aspects of the film may be due to stylistic differences
between Japanese and Western cinema, and I am not well versed in the former.
The dark nature of this film and its unashamed display of
mayhem makes this exceedingly accomplished for its genre; however it seems the
creating the concept drained this project of any further creativity and this
left its makers using dated techniques and obvious lines.
