Puss in Boots (2011)
* * *
A film for children it does not have an original
plot or an overly surprising ending. Its attempts to be sentimental fell
short, as did a lot of the comedy. It rises above the normal calibre of
spin-offs however does not stand so well as a film in its own right.
In this latest addiction to the Shrek franchise we
were introduced to even more fairy tale legends who create an
interesting and quirky cast of characters, especially Jack and Jill who
were depicted quite unexpectedly. This is very well animated; the cats
look wonderfully soft and there are certain sequences that are
beautiful.
For comedy value it fell well short of the original
Shrek film, following the pattern for all the sequels/spin-offs in this
franchise, however there are some moments that were funny. A lot of the
humour actually comes from referencing many films, such as Westerns or
Antonio Banderas’s other works. This is a refreshing type of humour as
it shows that this film does not take itself too seriously.
